Is Functional Medicine the Missing Link on Your Journey to Health?
When I was sick of feeling less than great, I turned to Functional Medicine. I was battling embarrassing GI symptoms, undiagnosed food sensitivities, sharp pains in my stomach, and constantly low energy crossed with highly emotional outbursts.
If I would have gone the conventional route, perhaps visited my local gastroenterologist or primary care doctor, it’s highly likely that the doctor would run some routine tests or biopsies for celiac disease, crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, and even food sensitivities; and the results would likely turn up negative as the doctor tells me I am fine….or the tests may even show false-positives.
What comes next is a prescription for medications I'd be advised to take for the rest of my life…and I’d be lucky to get 15 minutes with the doctor during this entire experience.
Can you relate?
How frustrating is it that there are so many of us searching for answers, and the only answer we’re given is that we’re “fine”, or we need surgery, or we need medication?
Do you believe in the power of your body and it’s ability to get healthy?
Functional Medicine provides a different way of thinking about disease…a model based on analyzing the root cause of symptoms and disease.
According to Dr. Mark Hyman, MD and Medical Director at the Cleveland Clinic’s Center for Function Medicine, “When Functional Medicine is applied in practice, it can effectively prevent, treat and often cure chronic conditions through a new way of seeing disease based on underlying causes.”
Functional Medicine seeks to get to the bottom of things. Conventional medicine, on the other hand, is organized primarily around suppressing symptoms with drugs and surgery.
I remember my first appointment with my functional medicine doctor: it was over 1 hour long, and may doctor asked so much about my emotional history that I was brought to tears. I felt like I was in therapy. She wanted to know EVERYTHING about me in order to move forward on a path towards my health.
Maybe the missing link in your wellness journey is to find a Functional Medicine practitioner that understands disease in a way that reverses your current circumstances, and makes you feel amazing one day soon!
